Robert Jordan - 1948-2007

I’m a few days late on this, but Robert Jordan, one of my favorite authors, died on Sunday, and I feel it would be a mistake if I didn’t say something about him.

I took The Eye of the World, the first book in Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, out from our local library during the summer before my senior year of high school. My father had read the entire series that had been published up to that point (nine books, at the time), and I needed something to read, so I decided I’d give the series a shot.

I’m glad I did, because it drew me in within the first twenty pages or so. The story was instantly compelling to me in the same way that The Lord of the Rings and Terry Brooks’ Shannara series were. I was amazed by the way Jordan took his story, split it into a few different threads, and then deftly wound them back together in a way that made perfect sense. I quickly finished The Eye of the World and then went on to tear through the rest of the series, which had gained a tenth book by the time I was finished. Since then, New Spring, a prequel to The Eye of the World, and Knife of Dreams, the eleventh book in the series, have come out, and I read those as quickly as I could finish them. The series definitely started to fall off around the fifth or sixth book, but I had enough invested in the characters and the story that I couldn’t just abandon them. I’ve been anxiously awaiting A Memory of Light, the final book in the series, ever since I finished Knife of Dreams.

Unfortunately, Jordan died before he could finish writing it. He left his wife with the plot and his notes, so it will still see publication. It’s a shame, though, because I can’t help feeling like it won’t be the same.

Robert Jordan was a prolific author, and I know that I’ll definitely miss seeing new material from him. If you’ve never read any of his stuff, now wouldn’t be a terrible time to start.

Unrelated, but RIP Colin McRae.

I hope this is the last post I write about someone dying for quite some time.

Open for business

There is still more tweaking to be done, more things to be added, but for the most part, everything is in order and working properly.

So.

With that.

Hi.

Even though you probably aren’t reading this right now unless you know me and I sent you the link, I’ll introduce myself anyway. I’ll try to keep it brief.

Anyway…I’m Andrew. I am the owner of this fine establishment. This blog is my latest foray into the Internet. What makes this blog different from the tens of thousands of other blogs out there?

Honestly, probably not too much. Once the dust settles, I’ve got some ideas for articles that I hope you’ll read. That’s about all I can promise right now.

But I do hope you’ll read the site. I worked for quite a bit of time on this, and I’m pretty happy with how it’s turned out. So I’m gonna attempt to maintain it fairly regularly.

So for all five of you (and I’m being generous), enjoy the ride.

A big thank you to one The Scot, who’s been pushing me to do this for months. Visit his blog, cause chances are, he’s better than you.

Still working out the kinks...

This is basically what the new layout is going to look like. Bear with me as I attempt to get it looking the way I want.
